Getting a Ibook but I need Microsoft word for college papers?

I want to get an Ibook but my college runs Windows with microsoft word what software do I need to work on it on mac and be able to work on it at college and be able to print and all using there computers

Is the computer you're getting an iBook or a new Macbook?

On either of them you simply need Microsoft Office for Mac - if all you need is Word then I'll suggest the Student & Teacher version, which has Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. 2004 is the version available now, and 2008 will be available soon. The Student & Teacher version is a good deal cheaper than any of the other versions.

As for printing you shouldn't have a problem, I don't know if you'll be able to set up your computer on their network and print straight from your laptop, it depends how their network is setup, but if worste comes to worste you can always save your document on portable storage (anywhere from a CD to a USB jump drive) and print it from the College's computers.

Alternatively, if it's a Macbook and not an iBook (Intel based - any of the new ones) you can use a utility called "Boot Camp" to run Windows on the computer for when you need to run programs like office - it will act just as any other Windows machine, and you'll be able to use all Windows software. The problem with this is you'll need a license for Windows aswell as your Office license.

Hope that helps!

I have one. Microsoft Office is no problem. You can even probably get it pretty cheap through your school. I have never had any trouble getting on my school network. It's usually all compatible.

If you must run Windows, the new internet browser has a program called Boot Camp which will allow you to do so. I have a Mac and Office for Mac (which I got for $99 at the school store) and everything has been compatible, even for my internet classes.

    you have 2 choices:
1.- buy ms office for mac - includes ms word mac version - fully compatible with ms office windows version
2.- if you have mac os x tiger version installed check if you have boot camp included in tiger version - buy copy of windows - run boot camp - you'll have to partition yr hard drive but boot camp walks you thru the whole process so no problem - you'll be able to run just about any windows program on yr ibook - you'll have ms word copy for windows too to install on windows partition
as you can see choice no. 1 is easier
if you're in college you get educational discount in any case

Go to OpenOffice.org and download their free office suite for the Mac. The word processor that comes with it (Writer) will create documents which are MS Word compatible (as long as you do a "Save As" and pick Microsoft Word as the document type).

Not only does Writer create MS Word docs, but the spreadsheet (Calc) will create Excel compatible spreadsheets and their presentation package (Impress) will create Powerpoint compatible presentations. Oh, and did I mention it's free? And there are versions for Windows, Mac & Linux.
